Brand Atlas
KUOE's design language is built entirely around the appeal of vintage hand-wound watches from the 1940s–70s — the idea that "classic" design transcends eras and cultures. The brand's stated goal is to channel Kyoto's historic, traditional identity into wristwatches, making that sense of timeless design broadly accessible rather than exclusive.
KUOE is a Japanese watch microbrand founded in Kyoto in 2020 by designer Uchimura, producing vintage-inspired dress watches and chronographs (the Old Smith, Royal Smith, Holborn, and Sombrero lines) assembled in its Kyoto workshop. The brand operates flagship retail locations in Kyoto and Tokyo's Omotesando district, with pricing in the $600–$1,800 range, and ships internationally with VAT/customs pre-included in listed prices.

The concept traces back to 2010, when founder and designer Uchimura, then a university student studying language in London, wandered into a shop selling antique watches and encountered a line-up of hand-wound pieces from the 1940s–70s. He was struck by how these old watches still kept time and felt warm and wearable despite their age, and that moment convinced him classic design has universal, cross-generational appeal. After graduating, he spent several years working for a watch company in Kyoto to learn the trade before launching KUOE as his own brand in 2020.
