The Panavia Tornado is the most important European combat aircraft of the Cold War and the years that followed. The aircraft began as the Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA) and first flew on the 14th August 1974. The 3 nations that built it, Great Britain, Germany and Italy, named the aircraft Tornado. Its swing-wing design made it instantly recognisable and its 2 main variants, the Interdictor Strike (IDS) and Air Defence Variant (ADV), were developed into potent aircraft for Interdiction and Nuclear Strike, Tactical Reconnaissance, Maritime Strike, Electronic Combat and as a long endurance agile Interceptor.
